Partner: International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The MSC Foundation and IUCN have joined forces to advance ocean science and support the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The IUCN is sharing marine restoration expertise through this partnership, highlighting the urgency of accelerating ocean science and leveraging IUCN data for conservation efforts. The MSC Foundation is contributing to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species by aiding in the completion of the first global assessment of coral species, facilitating work on risk assessment models, ecosystem mapping and data interpretation.

The partners aim to develop actionable restoration plans for coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds in line with the "30x30" Target of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Challenges

8,000+coral species

Gather global data on coral species and threatened marine life to inform restoration plans

30x30Target

Incorporate climate change in marine spatial planning to support threat reduction in target areas

100+ campaigns

Run effective conservation campaigns to promote stakeholder knowledge and practical action

200+ protected areas

Create new marine protected areas around biodiversity hotspots and critical habitats
