The Elbe Habitat Foundation was established in 2010 by the City of Hamburg to enhance the ecological status of the Tidal Elbe, preserve its natural diversity and strengthen the unique habitats of its river landscape.

A prestigious gala concert raising €250,000 for the Elbe Habitat Foundation’s Kirchwerder Project in Hamburg, an important city for the MSC Group, marked the official launch of the MSC Foundation.

The MSC Foundation organised and financed a prestigious gala concert for the Elbe Habitat Foundation’s Kirchwerder project, raising €250,000 to create a lifeline for endangered species by developing new tidal creek habitats in the dike foreland near Kirchwerder, Hamburg. The concert, which marked the official launch of the MSC Foundation, enabled the MSC Group to express its thanks to Hamburg, an important city for the Group.

Challenges

90% of river banks east of Hamburg heavily reinforced, inhibiting river dynamics

Unnaturally strong and increasing tidal range is a threat to biodiversity

Massive decrease in fish migration to their spawning grounds

Many tidal creek systems lost due to deepening of the Elbe and dike reinforcement
