A global effort to restore coral reefs: the MSC Foundation supports ICRI’s 2025 Report
Joining the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, the MSC Foundation helps deliver critical data to guide reef conservation worldwide
Focus Area: Marine Conservation
Coral reefs — the rainforests of the sea — are in crisis. These vital ecosystems support a quarter of all marine life and protect millions of people from coastal erosion and food insecurity. Yet, they are disappearing at an alarming rate.
To help turn the tide, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) — an operational network of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) — is developing the “Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025” report: the most comprehensive global assessment of coral reef health to date.
This critical work is being supported by the MSC Foundation, a member of ICRI since 2023, whose contribution will help ensure that governments, scientists, and conservationists have access to the latest data and trends, equipping them to make evidence-based decisions to protect reefs for future generations.
The 2025 report will build on more than four decades of global coral monitoring and will play a key role in supporting global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The MSC Foundation’s support aligns with its long-term commitment to ocean health and coral reef regeneration through its Super Coral Reefs Programme, aimed at reversing reef decline and restoring resilience in some of the world’s most affected marine environments.
